Foreign residency status refers to the legal permission for foreigners to stay in Korea.
Foreign residency status is categorized into short-term stay, long-term stay, and permanent residency. Short-term stay applies to stays of 90 days or less, while long-term stay applies to stays of 91 days or more. Permanent residency has no time limit.
Foreign residency status also varies based on the purpose of the foreigner's activities in Korea. For example, there are residence statuses for cultural and artistic activities, study abroad programs, training programs, journalism, religious activities, diplomatic missions,
investment in businesses,
trade and management,
professors,
artistic performances,
specific activities,
non-professional employment,
and seafarer employment. Each residence status has specific application procedures, processing periods, fees, application forms, and required documents.
Foreigners can stay in South Korea within the scope of their designated or granted residence status and duration as stated on their visa or granted upon entry. If a foreigner intends to work in South Korea, they must hold a residence status that allows employment and work only at designated workplaces.
For long-term stay and permanent residency holders,
they must complete foreigner registration or domestic address reporting within 90 days from the date of entry.
